When should a child first visit the dentist?

Early, positive dental visits help prevent problems and make future care feel familiar rather than frightening.

When should a child first visit the dentist?

A child’s first dental visit is ideally planned when the first tooth appears or by the first birthday. Early visits are usually brief, preventive and focused on helping parents establish healthy routines.

What happens at the appointment?

The dentist may check tooth development, gums, bite and oral habits. Parents can discuss brushing, fluoride, feeding patterns, teething, thumb sucking and accident prevention.

Preparing your child

Use calm, positive language. Avoid sharing stories about painful dental experiences or promising that nothing will happen. A simple explanation—“the dentist will count and check your teeth”—is usually enough.

Between visits

Brush twice daily with age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste, supervise brushing and reduce frequent sugary snacks or drinks. Seek care promptly after dental trauma or if you notice pain, swelling or changes in eating.
