Dental implants are designed to function for many years, but they are not maintenance-free. Healing and long-term stability depend on oral hygiene, gum health, bite forces, smoking status and regular professional review.
During early healing
Follow instructions for cleaning, medication and diet. Mild discomfort and swelling may occur initially; worsening pain, persistent bleeding or unexpected swelling should be reported to the clinic.
Protecting the implant
Brush carefully, clean between the implant restoration and neighbouring teeth, and attend recommended reviews. Implant restorations cannot develop decay, but the surrounding gum and bone can become inflamed.
Habits and risk factors
Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, night grinding and poor plaque control may increase complications. Your dentist may recommend a night guard or a shorter recall interval based on individual risk.
